Self-Hosted SaaS vs Subscription: Why I Build My Own Tools

Every tool I use in my business, I’ve either built myself or self-hosted. Here’s why — and when it makes sense for you.

The Problem With Subscription SaaS

The average startup spends $3,000–10,000/month on SaaS tools. Email marketing, CRM, analytics, automation — each adds up. And the moment you stop paying, you lose access to your data.

The Self-Hosted Approach

For the cost of a $10/month VPS, I run my entire stack: cold email platform, Instagram analytics tool, email verifier, and lead gen scraper. One-time build cost, zero recurring fees, full data ownership.

What I’ve Built

  • VisibleMail – Replaces $299/mo Instantly.ai or Smartlead
  • InstaReach – Replaces $99/mo Instagram tools
  • EmailVerify – Replaces $49/mo NeverBounce

When NOT to Self-Host

Self-hosting requires technical knowledge. If you need something today and can’t maintain infrastructure, a SaaS subscription makes sense. But if you’re technical or have a developer, the ROI of building your own is enormous.

Tech Stack I Use

Python + FastAPI for backends, SQLite for small datasets, PostgreSQL for larger ones, Docker for deployment, Nginx as reverse proxy, Ubuntu 24.04 VPS on Contabo.

Want me to build a self-hosted version of a tool you’re currently paying for? Let’s talk.
